Candle Holder Inspiration!

Hi everyone!

In blacksmithing, the new assignment is to make a candle holder. These holders are based loosely on this poem:
A Base,
A Handle,
And a place for the Candle.
My teacher explained this in a really cool story--and I really need to write all of these awesome blacksmithing stories down!--but I'll share it with you all. Back during the colonial times in the US, courting was still the main way to meet a guy and marry him. The daughter would go to her father and request time with a certain male, and the father would give her a specialized candle holder with a candle in it. The two would meet and spend time together, but as soon as the candle melted down to a certain point, the meeting would have to end and the girl would go back. It's been said to me that if the father liked the male, he would place a cork high into the candle holder. If the father disliked the male, he'd place the cork low.

Now, who's confused? Here's a visual, thanks to appleseedprimatives.com!

I did edit it, but there's a visual that's hard to beat! Thanks, guys!(:

For my assignment, though, I needed something just a bit different. We can't break our piece of metal apart (1/4, 4ft rod), but we can shape it however we'd like. The teacher won't help us that much, which is understandable--it's time that we came out of our shells! Even so, research never hurt!(;

I started Googling some candle holders that are obviously blacksmithed. I can't have anything too difficult--my chandelier is still needing some TLC ASAP--but I would like to have something that is still pretty. Maybe not overly simplistic, but also not overly difficult. It's an easy assignment, but for people like me who'd prefer to have a box and sleep in it, it's difficult. With some helpful pictures, though, I think I might just have an idea!

Some of my favourites:

osagebluffblacksmith.blogspot.com

blacksmith4u.com
factorydirectcraft.com
for-sale.yowcow.com
clarionhousecollectibles.com
islandblacksmith.ca

My personal favourite:
etsy.com

What do you think? Do you have any awesome candle stories? Let me know in the comments!
Cheers!

Light Quotes!

Hi everyone!

Thought I might show you how I basically do things--it's fun! So, not too much writing today. Bummer, I know. First though: put on some music!(:

Here's a Before picture--the only thing I did was chop it down so it wouldn't
take up half my blog page.(:

Here's a picture of what I was doing when I got started--it's not too much.
I actually really like this one--it shows that with a few (two for this one) changes, you can
majorly change a picture's feel.

HA! This is what I dubbed my "fairy picture"--because, look at it!
IT LOOKS LIKE A FAKEY GLITTER EFFECT! (okay, that's basically what it is)
But still, bit older, but still warm. And anyone else see the
sparkles swirling? o.o

And I don't remember what I did with this one to make it so... dark. But I
like it a lot. Kinda has that "cliched" look about it--ya know, with the lame quotes
that are somewhat taken out of context?

... speaking of which...
Your welcome.

I thought it needed something different, though. More introvert-friendly and ...
REALISTIC. ^.^

Challenge: Create a photo with a lame quote that's taken out of context
and has NOTHING to do with the picture and
POST A LINK IN THE COMMENTS!

Cheers!

The Changes Made to BloggingWithout...

Hi everyone!

With recent times going as they were, it makes me want to immerse myself even more into my writing. Not even book writing--but blog writing. And I think that blog writing can quickly become awesome if I really put the time and effort into it, and also those around me. Maybe I'm being overly ambitious? But at the same time, I've found that the break from my blog has done more harm than good. All in all, it's really pressed me to be more positive and smiley because I'm blogging. I can say, "Yeah, I'm a blogger!(:" instead of, "Um... I blindly surf Youtube?"

Blogging is about community, and putting yourself out there, and bettering yourself. Knowing that you are committed to putting yourself out there entirely--not for your audience's benefit, but yours--and not lying about it gives you that bit more to strive for. You go looking for adventure. You take up new, exciting hobbies--all to give your audience something exciting to look at. And maybe I did fail a little bit, these first few months. But, it's safe now, so I'm coming back on.

And I'm super excited!

Some changes:

  1. I'm starting a new blog (will be linked up top as BloggingWith) that is dedicated to more hard-pressed issues and my ideas on them. I do have opinions, but for those that are a bit more gender-specific and not G-rated (as I want this blog to be), I will be posting them into the Blogging Without portion.
  2. As soon as the last week of May, we'll be introducing some exciting interviews! I know I've promised some lady blogger's them already, and I hope to do them every month, which means pressing my circles and stretching my brain. I'll post a topic that we'll interview about every month, and start finding random people to interview as according!
  3. ACTUAL PHYSICAL CHANGES. I'm so excited!!!
It's so good to be home again~! Yay for the feeling of normality coming back! ^.^ And, I'm totally going to ballet again so the excitement is just rising! Ah!

Cheers!

Cheers!

Guest Interview: BlackPanther7

  • Hi everyone!

Today, we have another guest, BlackPanther7. She stepped into my Cabin for a brief amount of time, and we had an interview.(: Hopefully this is insightful for you all! BlackPanther7 is a long-time NaNo-er, and I think she has some super insightful tips! Are you inspired to do camp? Camp happens again in July! Try it out!(:

How long have you been doing NaNo?
    Since 2006.

Why did you decide to do NaNo?A friend told me about it in freshman year of high school and I tried it. She recommended me because I've always been writing.

Why have you stuck with it?
I've stuck with it because I love to write, even if I don't finish. I'm a writer, and I'm determined to finish one book an publish it.

Have you met others during Camp?
Yes, I have many friends, most that I've become close with.

So, you've stayed in contact with them over the years?
Oh yeah, we are all in the Skype Cabin that came about about two years ago. I believe.

Has having a group of others helped you in your writing?
Yes, they are the ones that have helped me to finished and want to improve my writing

Do you plan to do anything with your writing?
I plan on publishing, either with a publisher or self-publishing through Amazon.

Have you gotten anything to help you through a month of writing?
Hmmm... just talking and doing the Write or Die website.

Do you have anything in your "camp survival kit"?
Yeah.. I blanket (just kidding), not really. I do get cold, so I have a blanket and arm warmers for typing. I also have munching foods ^.^ Gummies or Skittles work for me

And lastly, what's your favourite dessert?
At the moment... Caramel Ice Cream!

Thanks, BlackPanther7!(: Stay tuned for some more interviews!

    Cheers!

Apologies

Hi everyone!

I know. I'm super far behind, and I am dying over here because of it. And let's not get too excited and say that I'm just dying because of this blog--nope. Everything has gotten super overwhelming. See, I have a different blog, one for Irish dancing (that I'm certain some of you have checked out) that needs to be updated and have videos put up on. In fact, it needs posts and steps and so much work. I've also been working on two dance routines for my school's upcoming show (one tap, the other lyrical) of which ya'll might get to see (ah... we'll see how blurry my face is in the end). They're actually coming along pretty nicely! And NaNo, and school, and... sleep. I really need to get some sleep.

I've decided not to bring up my lack of love on some of the other blogs (guys I'm so sorry I've really meant to post more comments than I have!).

It's been a long week(s).

But, I'm really thankful that I did take time last month to write a lot for NaNo. Though I'm not happy about it, I'm using those words in my final word count. I really wasn't expecting life to be like what it is (that being busy). I mean, how does a nerd with no life suddenly get busy? I've promised myself that I would take time to sit and write out blog posts early, but as everyone can see that isn't happening.

I need to stop complaining and just get stuff done now! Thank you all for reading my rants.(: Now, let's get this done!

I WILL be back soon with more posts that are along the lines of the series I have started! Promise! (like, Thursday! Thursday and we'll be back on track!)

Cheers!

Mash-Up Monday!

Hi everyone!

As I'm writing this, I'm deciding on some tough ideas for my novel. I love the first draft because there's still so much to change--but the second draft looks like it's going to be so much better. Right now, I'm on chapter four, with about 19,000 words total. I'm about three days ahead of the game, and plan to spend most of tonight writing so I can get even further ahead. But, in the long run, life's gotten exhausting and a bit of me just wants to curl up and take a nap. It's been a long past few days.

In other words, I have another interview coming up this Friday, and it will continue until the end of the month. I think this is a segment worth doing--Friday interviews! Hopefully my blogging circle will expand large enough so I can be able to do that. If you're a reader but not a commenter, please start considering commenting! In May we'll start interviewing more random people in my life, and I'm thinking that we'll have a monthly change-of-perspective (i.e. May will be "Blog Upkeep", June will be "Inspiration", and the like). If you'd like to be apart of this, please comment! All interviews will be picked at random depending on the number of Fridays in a month.

But, I guess I know what's on your mind: "Jenn, you're the biggest liar ever."

And I'll just sit over here like: OMGSH GUYS I'M SO TIRED AND AND AND AND... I'm really sorry. <3 I'll work on it.

Huge update sometime this week!

Cheers!

Guilty Pleasures and Helpful Hints

Hi everyone!

It's been a super busy week! I've been helping some friends out with a video for school (and am editing it for chocolate)(mwahahaha), writing like crazy, getting homework done, and... neglecting my blog.): Because of my camera's most recent death (okay, the battery died but still), I wasn't able to get the picture for yesterday up. Actually, plan was to take the picture during twilight, but I guess the guys I was with burnt out the battery. Sad day.

Anyway, I'm going to do a ton of writing and video editing this weekend. And I'll be rebelling--possibly--by putting my blog posts towards my word count in NaNo. It's just a lot of stuff going on, and I salute those that can write a ton and still get their word count in. Life seems too busy! *dies* But in a good way?

Moving on, I've decided on another list! This time, it's about my guilty pleasures and helpful hints to anyone that feels they need them. Because, ya know, on a bad day it's just easier to write it in a list.

  • HH: Make a Youtube playlist! Blogging with a playlist is one of the best things you can do for yourself, especially if you write better with music! (like me!) If you're not a fan of music, then
  • HH: Seclude yourself in an area of silence, or write outdoors.
  • GP: I like Taylor Swift songs. I think they are the best songs to write to.
  • GP: I'm sitting here with a bag full of egg-shaped Reese's pieces and a glass full of water, and nomming on them occasionally.... I need to go work out.
  • HH: Work out! Seriously! Writers block? WORK OUT! Go run around the block, take 30 minutes to do pointe, do some crunches or push-ups--just get moving! I promise you, you'll come back with some fresh ideas.
  • GP: I learn songs in Irish-Gaelic, and then sing them around school. Loudly.(:
  • HH: If you do learn songs in a strange language that many people can't identify, try learning the translated lyrics. When people ask, you can sing it (roughly) in English (or the language the both of you speak), and tell them you were singing in _____. It seriously is awesome when they're like "O.O OMG YOU WEREN'T MUMBLING TO YOURSELF!"
  • GP: Watching ballets. It's not common, and not even considered a "normal thing", but honestly, it's what I do. And Swan Lake is one of the saddest tragedies out there, promise.
  • HH: Outline your blog posts. Or, outline your posts for the month and all the series you plan on doing--having a strict list will help!
And that's all we have time for today! See ya peeps!(:
Cheers!

Interview with Christina

 Hi everyone!

Today, we have another fantastic camper interview that I got to meet during this year's camp! Want to get involved? Feel it's too late to start now? That's okay, camp happens again this July. Hope tosee you there! If you do participate, feel free to comment or contact me so we can be cabin mates! But for now, here's Christina!

Q: How did you first get involved with Camp?
A: They introduced it in 2011, and we'd all heard about it on the regular site, so when it came around, I thought 'Why not'? and signed up. That was how I started to meet everyone else.

Q: How long had you know about NaNo?
A: Mmm. I am going to say about 2007. It was actually in the middle of November I believe, when I remembered about it, and I was still on the fence about it so I didn't participate for those reasons. In 2008, it was still daunting, being a high school student and contending with writing a 50,000 word novel as well, so I decided not to do it. In 2009 it was the year I finally decided to sign up. So altogether I have known about it for7 or 8 years.

Q: What took you "off the fence" and made you finally decide to do NaNo?
A: I wasn't in school anymore for one, so I had a bit more free time on my hands. Finally I decided to go for it. I won that year with a little over 50,000 words.

Q: What was most helpful when you did NaNo/Camp?
A: For me, i find that it's easier to do it all in one sitting. I know it sounds awful but I just sit there and write, usually. Other days I will take it slow. I find that it is all about going at the pace you have to, and not follow what everyone else is doing. Another thing that is most helpful is rewards. I went "Oh, I get to go read a fanfic chapter if I get this many words done" And at the end of the month if you do pass, reward yourself with something REALLY nice that you have set up in advance (perhaps something you've been wanting for awhile), so you have a bigger reward at the end for crossing the finish line. Another thing that helps is other wrimo's, especially during regular NaNo. Meet up with a few of them, and your word counts will soar. I have had opportunity to host a few of these as an ML and they were a blast.

Q: What is your biggest "muse" when writing?A: I guess, and this is really strange to say, but my muses are my characters. They kind of "tell me" what they want to happen, and I write it.

Q: Do you work hard at figuring out where your story is going, or do you let your characters lead you?
A: Haha. I am a pantser. Basically that means I come up with a lil bit of plot, Character names, and I let them play! Some pantsers however, have been known not to even do that!

Q: Is there anything you want your Cabin Mates to help you with most of all along the way?
A: Just talk. The last few years, I have had cabins that weren't active. I swear I even heard crickets! I am hoping to rectify that with this years "Everyday activity" option.

Q: Have you ever wrote a person into a novel that you didn't like, just to kill them off? If so, how did they die? If not, would you, and how would you execute it?
A: Hmmm. Not a novel, but I did have an assignment for a writing group where we had to kill off our inner editor. You know, that person in your head that's always screaming "THAT'S WRONG! FIX IT! NOW!" I created her, and didn't like her because hey, she was impeding my writing, darn it! And then I killed her off in the most horrible way possible. But I've never done so in a novel. Usually for me, deaths have a purpose. Even the inner editor's death had a purpose, and that was to free me up to actually, y'know, write.

Q: Do you purposely write in morals and ideas into your novels?
A: Morals not so much. I mean to me, a story is about telling fantastical things that can't happen. Or discovering uncharted territory. It is not used to impose my beliefs on other people, nor would I ever want it to be.

Q: Any advice for possible NaNo Writers?A: Do it. Just dive in. If you think you won't be able to do the full 50,000 then move it down, if it is during camp. If it is during regular NaNo, I suggest you try it. You never know what you are going to accomplish. You have a whole forum of people to help you get to that 50K. And if you break it up, say one 500 word session, one 567 word session, and one 600 word session you can easily get your words for the day.

Bonus Question: Favourite dessert?
A: Hmmm. That's a tough one. I don't really eat a lot of sweets. But I do eat some candy. I guess it would have to be a turtles candy bar.

Thanks, Christina!(: I found that very inspiring, and there's lots of excellent advice in there! I hope everyone enjoys it just as much as I have!

Cheers!

Um... Hello!

Hi everyone!

How many days has it been?! Like... two many. (haha, see what I did there?) Anyway, to make up, I have tons of photos for you. Because that's basically how I roll--staying away and then making an explosion of photos. But the thing is, NaNo has been hard and I'm helping some kids in my school make a video. But, lucky-lucky, there's been some amazing weather so the photos should look fantastic! And, I'm spending tonight to pre-write posts for the month of April as well. There will be posts for *fingers crossed* hopefully every day this month after this week. (anyone realize how hard writing a novel and up-keeping a blog is? I know other NaNoers have been writing blogs, and to those, my heart has gone out to you! Godspeed!)

Photo-a-Day: Day 1

Isn't it awesome? And totally edited maybe a bit too much? But, it fits my privacy policy--that being that there shall be no hints or ideas to what I actually look like. But, I suppose now everyone knows that I have brown hair and white-ish (hehehehehe..) skin. But that's not too much, yes? (my legs/feet are soon to be on the internet [Irish dancing tutorial videos], so I'm pretty chill)

Photo-a-Day: Day 2

Ah! I couldn't find any better colours--we're just getting out of winter, so the world is pretty dull. And there was such a cute kitty sitting there, who stayed there patiently while I took the picture. (I took it while walking 2 dogs--getting my camera out took a few minutes!) But, I think it's really nice, and rather beautiful.

Lastly...

My chandelier for blacksmithing! Ah, isn't she beautiful? I mean, it's so... curvy... and awkward... and yeah. I realize that it's not the best, but I also realize that it's only my third project. But the cool thing is: I did this all by myself! I'm become a smith, and it's so awesome!(:

Hopefully that's enough for now... watch out for blogging NaNo!

Cheers!

April Photo-a-Day Challenge!

Hi everyone!

April is here! That means: I'm almost done with school, Renaissance Faire auditions are in two months, SPRING is FINALLY HERE (we've been snow-covered since November, it's now nice and sunny!), annnnnddddd....

I'm doing my first photo-a-day challenge (while doing NaNo!)

Hopefully this will give me a great break from all that writing, and will help my blog become more colourful. This one is from Fat Mum Slim, who I found thanks to Erato from The Muses' blog! Join Erato and I along this journey, and post links to your pics below!(:

Note: All pictures will be posted the day after the day is called for (due to the time thing--Blogger resets way before midnight come along where I live). But I'll still be doing them daily!

Cheers!
