Goals

Hi everyone!

Quickly, I want to just write down my goals. These are important to me--the reason I'm sticking it out in high school.

As many of you know, I want to grow up and major in Blacksmithing. Because for some reason, getting coal dust in my hair and dying in the heat sounds like fun. (actually, I plan on moving somewhere cold in order to beat the heat--but we'll see, college first) My dream college is Tennessee Tech. (I don't actually live in Tennessee, guys.) I want to go away from home, and that's far enough to be happy, but close enough that if I needed to run home, I probably could at a lower cost.

Thing is, though, we're pretty poor. I'd be using loans and (hopefully) working to get myself through college, and I don't know if that's possible or allowed yet. And I'm not exactly worried just yet. But I still like having a rough idea of what I want to do and where I want to go.

So I'm not freaking out about something that won't happen for a while. I'm just typing my goal. And the big question: how much does that goal cost?

$15,000 per. year.

Is it worth it?

Cheers!
Jenn

  1. Look for scholarships! There are all sorts of scholarships!! There are scholarships for EVERYONE! (Except white people whose parents make a decent amount of money, but not enough money to send their kid to college and still live comfortably -.- Totally not speaking from experience, of course.)

But seriously! There are some schools (like mine) that give out scholarships just because you're black! (Of course, that applies to neither of us, but it's just an example.)

Look online! Check out the scholarships at your school! Sign up for Fastweb.com, and complete the profile! Try out for EVERY scholarship you come across! There's money out there if you can find it! I was lucky enough to get the second-highest scholarship amount offered at my school, through my GPA and ACT score. (I applied and interviewed for the full scholarship, but I didn't make it. Guess "puppeteering" isn't enough of a community service thing for them...)

Try to get a summer job, if you can! See if you can do work-study at your campus! There are some schools that allow you to work in the bookstore, the library, etc., if your family makes under a certain amount per year, and everything you would've "earned" could go towards your tuition, or you could just keep it in-pocket.

What's worse than tuition is BOOK MONEY! My first semester, books cost me $535!

My suggestion? Open a savings account! Put all your money in there! Work odd jobs for the neighbors, if you can, and make a little money like that! (There are some banks that give special bonuses for teenage savings accounts!) Save money with couponing! Learn how to save every penny you can! (It'll really help come your college days!)

There's money out there, if you can find it :3 Best of luck to you!! I know you'll be able to do it. Keep your dreams high, Jenn!

    1. I'm totally aware of the scholarships!(: Depending on what's offered when I get ready to search for scholarships, I've heard rumours of them being offered for just being a female blacksmith. Without that, though, I'm half Comanche, so I've got the race scholarship IN THE BAG!!! :P

Books, though, I've heard horrible things about. It's like you can't illegally download them off the internets or something! >.<

    2. My friend is 1/4...Cherokee or Choctaw or something, so the Tribe paid for her entire tuition. Unfortunately, she lost that because she failed a couple of classes last semester. (She graduated high school a year before I did.) I don't know if she'll be able to earn it back.

I'm 1/8 Choctaw, I believe (or something; I don't even know any more), so I'm like >THIS< close to having had my college paid for XD Oh, well.

And hey, some books you really can't get off the internet. Although if you ever attempt to Torrent a book, you might want to be careful o.o Much less hassle to buy the book & resell it from the internet than to get caught illegally downloading a book and get kicked out of school! XD

    3. That's a huge loss! I checked with the reservations, though, and you apparently need relatives (and active relations with them) at the reservation. Oh wells, though.(: I'm a female blacksmith!

I was being sarcastic! ;) I'd pay for all my books, like a good little student. But if you look long and hard, you can get *anything* off the internets.
